Some members of Friday Voices had been singing together for more than 30 years in the Burton area, and for much of that time, Friday night had been singing night. In 2004 the idea emerged to form a new group of singers to keep the Friday tradition going, and after responding to an invitation from Chris Mallinson, a well respected and highly talented choral animateur, a band of willing but wary singers gathered together in a small village in Staffordshire and wondered what they had let themselves in for!
It turned out that the main activity of the Friday evenings that followed was discussion about the name of the new group, but in between, Chris Mallinson began to meld the individual voices into a distinct sound, the people there began to discover an enjoyment of singing with each other, and a choir was born. The choir’s inaugural concert was given in Swadlincote in April 2005, and the choir was fully launched onto the unsuspecting public in a joint concert with Choros Amici (Sainsbury Choir of the Year) in July 2005.
'Friday Voices' exists to have fun, to work hard, and to sing to the highest standard it can achieve.
since 2008
Chris combines a musical
background and drama training
in his 'day-job' as Head of
Performing Arts in a Derbyshire
comprehensive school. He has
been General Editor of Sing for
Pleasure publications, works
regularly with a number of
highly regarded choirs, and
is a much sought after choral
trainer and 'fixer' for choral groups of many styles, from chamber ensembles to quartets and Barbershop choruses. Alongside his passion for inspiring and improving choirs of all types, Chris trains new and experienced choral directors for Sing for Pleasure, the British Federation of Young Choirs, ABCD, and the British Association of Barbershop Singing. Chris produces warm-ups and workshops for choral competitions and now, following the success of one of his choirs, Choros Amici who were Sainsbury's Choir of the Year, is a highly regarded choral adjudicator. He is in great demand as a workshop leader and is renowned for the fun and energy he brings to courses (classical, barbershop, and gospel) in his role as a roving choral animateur.
